Hong Kong 30th October 1857 I have the honor & acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2nd Just: communicating to me the opinion of a Court of Enquiry and the remarks of His Excellency the Rient: General, Commanding, & have to request you will lay the following statement before his Excellency.
It now appears to me that the Court of was to investigate and report on my during
time when I was in Command of the Froops at this station, yet no information was given me as to the purport of the Enquiry.

I saw in Jeneral Orders the Court was to assemble : the purpose not stated. Major Macdonald told me I would be required to attend. on the following day, as I might be required to give evidence before the Court, but upon what subject. I was not informed. From a private note previously received Ibelieved it was about the Cowloon affair otherwise I should have been ignorant of the subject of enquiry, and been ignorant of indeed until I had received your letter I was not aware my conduct was under investi gation The Court has reported "a copy of the note was sent round by order of Colonel Dunlopke. I positively deny any to have had the note copied by the Town Major or circulated; this Itold him as soon as I heard he had done so, though I fully believe he did so under the impression Shad ordered
